Looking in - human interiors by Thijs Wolzak

For the section ‘Looking In’ in Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, Thijs Wolzak photographed people with a special home every week for six years. He scrutinized the interiors, listened to the people’s stories, and figured out how to capture all that in one image. The photographs were always a complete representation of this encounter, down to the smallest detail.

20 interiors, 20 stories

In Design Museum Den Bosch, we exhibited 20 of these photographs more than life-size on luminous displays. We placed them criss-cross in space. The photos are so big that it looks like you can step into the interiors. They also work as a kind of walls, creating a maze. Seats have been made in between: small sofas, couches, kitchen chairs, tables, et cetera. All used stuff, so it’s a bit like being in someone’s house. You can view a photo from your chair and listen to stories from the residents via an iPod. The museum hall became a pleasant place to stay where you do not want to leave.
