CLIMATE CHANGE BROUGHT TO THE SURFACE
La Brea Tar Pits

Kossmanndejong has been selected by the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) to lead the design of the exhibition spaces and develop visitor experiences for the reimagining of the La Brea Tar Pits. The asphalt seeps at La Brea Tar Pits are the only consistently active and urban Ice Age excavation site in the world. This makes the site a unique window into active science—where fossils are discovered, prepared, researched, and displayed in one place: the heart of Los Angeles. The collections provide insight into climate changes in Los Angeles and on Earth over the last 50,000 years of history. The entire Tar Pits complex in Hanock Park LA is being overhauled and redeveloped in collaboration with a team of architects and landscape designers led by New York architectural firm Weiss/Manfredi.
