Orchidee, Keukenhof

Keukenhof is an iconic destination where over a million tourists gather each spring to admire the Dutch tulips. But it’s not just about tulips; the park showcases a vast array of other flowers, including orchids. We transformed these orchid stories into a spatial experience. The challenge was to offer depth without slowing the crowd down: how to pique the curiosity of a tourist primarily focused on taking pretty pictures?

The art of balance

Our solution combines bold design gestures with layers of storytelling that never obstruct the flow. The information is short and understandable: striking facts, infographics, and wall-to-wall imagery. By designing a logical, spacious route with paths at least two meters wide, everyone moves through the space naturally. Every visitor gets the story, without the crowd ever getting stuck.

Wild nature in a cultivated world

Three-part collage

Juliana Paviljoen Keukenhof
The exhibition shows the most beautiful cultivated flowers. Interwoven throughout is the story of the wild orchid. In nature, these rare plants are under pressure and desperately need our protection. By zooming in on the orchid’s unique role in our ecosystem and highlighting its true 'wow factor,' we aim to make visitors aware of its vulnerability.

The focus on nature also extends to the construction. By choosing a modular setup, the exhibition is fully circular and can be reused next year.

Project data

  • 10.000visitors per day
  • 8weeks open per year
  • 25.000wild orchid species worldwide
  • 6months from design to realisation

Picture perfect

Almost everyone visits Keukenhof to capture the beauty of the flowers. That’s why the ‘selfie culture’ is given plenty of room in the pavilion. In the center of the spaces, we placed massive installations with stunning plants and perfect lighting. These are the ideal photo spots. Because they are centrally located, people can pose freely without blocking the flow for others.

In this way, the visitor becomes more than just a spectator. They become an ambassador for the story.
