Make Space for Change
This publication is our third one about the practice of exhibition design. The first, Engaging Spaces (2010), uses project examples to illustrate the potential of exhibition design, emphasizing the cohesive combination of elements like space, collection, and media. The second, Narrative Space (2012), places exhibition design in a broader context, advocating for a story-focused approach where the visitor’s experience is key.
This third publication builds on those foundations, exploring the transformative potential of narrative space. Drawing on our own practice as well as that of other creative pioneers, we unpack the key drivers of change in the field of experience design.

We view exhibition design as a contemporary medium that reflects the complex interconnections of today’s world. As Femke Bijlsma states in the conclusion of the book:
This is an invitation to everyone reading this to take this young medium further and tap into its full potential. There are so many important stories that deserve to be told – stories that have been marginalised, hidden or ignored because they don’t align with the normative narrative. Let’s bring them to the surface. Let’s fill our time and world with stories that matter, and experience them together in ways that connect us, ground us in the here and now, focus our attention and reawaken our imagination. So, we can start thinking in terms of possibilities again, instead of limitations. Let’s embrace all possible creative tools and disciplines to bring these stories to life. Designers, curators, scientists, clients, visitors – everyone can play a role. The possibilities are as limitless as the means.
